MAIL ORDER AND SPECIAL EDITION PONIES

Throughout the G1 line, Hasbro issued many mail order premium ponies to order with a small fee + a number of Horseshoe Points. Horseshoe Points came on boxes of My Little Ponies and could be saved up to buy special issued ponies from little catalogues they issued. There were also in-store special issue ponies that had special themes, came with other merchandise or accompanied dolls. Many of the later ponies were manufactured in smaller numbers as My Little Pony was losing popularity and are now big items with collectors.

TWICE AS FANCY BABY PONIES: Collectors the world over bemoan that these little babies were so exclusive and the only TAF babies to be issued. Very pricey now, the babies didnt necessarily follow their “mummies'” lead in that some, like Baby Sweet Tooth and Baby Up , Up and Away, were issued as unicorns to their earth pony mothers. Or, like Baby Milky Way, was issued as a pegasus to her unicorn mum. Either way, pony collectors love them! They cost 1 Horseshoe Point + $4.50 P/H.

On her way to bed, Merry Treat realized no one had left cookies and milk for Santa Claus! So she placed the snack on a table and sat in a chair to watch the falling snow. Soon, she was fast asleep, and awoke only when sunshine brightened the room. The milk and cookies were gone, but beside the empty plate was a big candy cane with a note from Santa that read “Dear Merry Treat, Thank you for the delicious Christmas surprise!” She could hardly wait for the other ponies to wake up and join her on this beautiful Christmas morning. (*from backcard)

BIRTHDAY BABY PONIES: Two baby ponies, Baby Sugarcake and Baby Gametime were issued as mail order promos with birthday accessories for 2 Horseshoe Points + $5.50 each P/H. Here comes the bride with pretty wedding accessories. (*from packaging)

Dum-dum-de-dum…here comes the bride, all dressed in white! Wedding bells are ringing for the Pony Bride, and everyone is anxiously awaiting her walk down the aisle. She looks so lovely in her lacy veil and diamond engagement ring that sparkles as brightly as the sun. Afterwards, there will be a big celebration in the garden, where the bride will greet all her wedding guests and serve them delicious wedding cake baked by the lovebirds. Before the party is over, her bridesmaids will give her a bouquet to toss, and whoever catches it will be the next bride in Ponyland. Who will it be? (*from backcard)

YEAR NINE

BABY STOCKINGS:  Only officially named “Christmas Baby Pony,” she is commonly called “Baby Stockings” (not to be confused with the mail order earth adult pony, Stockings) and was licensed by Hasbro but avilable only through mail order from Kellogg’s in an offer on marked Rice Krispies cereal boxes.

MOMMY AND BABY PONY: While there was a mummy/newborn twins set late in G1, Mommy and Baby Beech Keen are thought of as Hasbro’s “official” mummy and baby set (not counting the Loving Family sets which were issued with both parents in the US or all sold separately elsewhere). Strictly a mail order offer, the two cost 2 Horseshoe Points + $9.95 P/H and came with a crib, comb and bottle for baby. The set is very coveted by collectors.

RAPUNZEL: Ask many collectors and though they may deeply desire Mimic, they’ll tell you Rapunzel (or commonly, “Punzie”) is their grail of grails. Thought of as the rarest/most valuable U.S. G1 pony, her colouring and curls are very similar to the earlier mail order Goldilocks but she has a great more abundance of hair and she came with barettes similar to the Brush ‘n Grow Ponies. She was available through mail order only for 2 Horseshoe Points and $8.95 P/H.

FIREFLY’S ADVENTURE:  The first My Little Pony cartoon aired in 1984 and reprised in 1986 as part of the My Little Pony and Friends cartoon as an edited version of that episode. Restored and renamed Firefly’s Adventure, it was released in year 9 on VHS with a different pose of Firefly. The lyrics for the special’s song and synopsis can be seen over at My Little Wiki.

YEAR TEN

BIRTHDAY PONY: For My Little Pony’s 10th anniversary,  Hasbro released the special Birthday Pony who came with either a golden heart necklace, rope bracelet or hair clip in a surprise box for a child to wear and had an all-over printing and ribbons in her hair. There is evidence that the Confetti pose for the Birthday Pony was considered by Hasbro as well as a more multi-colour design.

Inside is a special present for you! (*from packaging)

Happy Birthday! When a little girl has a birthday, the Birthday Pony makes the day as wonderful as can be. She paints the sky with a beautiful rainbow that lasts from dawn to dusk, and sends songbirds to fill the air with pretty melodies. When it’s time for the party, the Birthday Pony arrives first, decorated with colorful confetti and bright ribbons from her nose to her tail. Best of all, she brings a fancy box with her, and inside the box is a present for the birthday girl. Oh… it’s your birthday? Then get ready for a surprise from the Birthday Pony! (*from packaging)

Bridal Beauty: Bridal Beauty was a slightly more colorful version of the earlier Pony Bride and came with a bouquet that doubled as a child’s hair barrette and can be hard to find now.

Wedding Day Magic: A wedding in Ponyland is unlike any other wedding because music fills the air from dawn to dusk. On the morning of the wedding, the sun tosses beads of light everywhere, and the beads burst into fragrant flowers. Silvery clouds of lovebirds fill the air with their romantic songs. The bride has her own wonderful magic to enchant the day. When she blinks her eyes, a lacy veil floats softly around her head. She taps her foot, and a lovely bridal bouquet appears for her to hold. Now, everything is ready- let the Ponyland wedding begin! (*from packaging)
